Carvajal reveals why Isco rejected Captain’s armband from Marcelo

Real Madrid await their Champions League round of 16 opponents as Los Blancos qualified as group toppers despite losing 0-3 to CSKA at home. The defeat was Real Madrid’s heaviest home defeat in all European Competitions and it left a sour taste as the reigning European Champions wanted to end their group campaign in style.

One of Real Madrid’s players has been under harsh criticism by fans and he has not been firing all cylinders this season. Isco’s performance against CSKA was not appreciated by the fans as the Spaniard was also jeered by the home supporters.

Isco reacted angrily towards the jeers showing expressions of discontent and saying harsh words in return to the fans. Isco was also presented the Captain’s armband by Marcelo when he was taken off, however, Isco refused to take the Captain’s armband.

In the post match interview, Marcelo explained: “I tried to give the Captain’s armband to Isco but he asked me to give it to Carvajal. I don’t know why.”

However, Dani Carvajal has now explained why Isco refused to take the Captain’s armband from Marcelo. In an interview with Real Madrid TV on Thursday, Carvajal explained:

“I feel very proud and honoured to have worn the armband in a competitive match. I’d like to thank Isco, because by rights he should have had it, as he signed for the club a few days before me.”

“He wore it against Melilla [in the Copa del Rey last week], and he said to me then that next time, if the circumstance came about again, he would let me have it. I’m grateful to him for that, because it was a really nice gesture.”

“Marcelo did not know about it. That’s all there was to it.”

Real Madrid now prepare to face Rayo Vallecano in La Liga as the Los Blancos hope to gain 3 points and cut Barcelona’s lead from the top.
