Last night saw one of the most amazing comebacks in Champions League history as AS Roma came back from a three goal deficit to progress to the Semi Finals of the Champions League on away goal advantage. Roma lost the first leg 4-1 with two of Barcelona’s 4 goals coming from Rome boys De Rossi and Manolas.
However, both players made amends for their mistakes in the first leg as both of them scored in Rome to complete a memorable 3-0 comeback for Roma and progress to the Semi Finals.
Edin Dzeko’s goal in the 6th minute lifted the spirits of the home crowd. Dzeko was brought down by Pique in the penalty box in the second half which led to the referee awarding a penalty to Roma.
De Rossi stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick to make it 2-0 for Roma and then late drama unfolded when Manolas head a corner from close range to make it 3-0 for Roma and a remarkable turn around win.
Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp, whose team also progressed to the Semi Final was informed about the turn of events in Rome and Klopp’s response was crazy. Klopp said:
“When I was in the dressing room tunnel they told me what had happened in Rome and I thought it was a joke.” (Laughs)
“I do not want to be disrespectful with Roma, it’s a fantastic team, but I did not expect it. They lost Salah and they are in the semifinals, it’s fantastic.”
Salah could also face his former team if both Roma and Liverpool are paired together for the Semi Finals of the Champions League this Friday.
